In 1998 Redman released his first collaboration album El Niño with group Def Squad. During this time, with new found friendships with Method Man and Tupac, they both appeared on Tupac’s double album “All Eyez on Me” on the song “Got my Mind Made Up”. The album was certified gold by the RIAA on February 12, 1997. The song “Do What You Feel” also appeared on the soundtrack to the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. The album featured two Billboard Hot 100 singles, “Whateva Man” and “It’s Like That (My Big Brother)”. On DecemRedman released his third album Muddy Waters, which was highly praised by critics. During this time he used former mentor Erick Sermon to produce his records, including “Pick it up” and “Whateva Man” from Muddy Waters. Redman’s second album was notable for having most of the tracks produced by the artist himself (later on Redman would let other producers make most of his beats). The first single, “Rockafella”, samples Leon Haywood’s “I Want’a Do Something Freaky to You” and George Clinton’s “Flash Light”, two of the most sampled songs in Hip Hop. Redman followed this up with his 1994 album, Dare Iz a Darkside. He was named “Rap Artist of the Year” by The Source. The album peaked at number forty-nine on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. In 1992 Redman released his debut album, Whut? Thee Album, which Allmusic noted for blending “reggae and funk influences” with a “terse, though fluid rap style”. He was also a member of the Def Squad in the late 1990s. He is also well known for his collaborations with Method Man, including their starring roles in films and sitcoms. In 1990, the Funk Doctor made his world debut on the EPMD album Business as Usual, appearing on tracks “Hardcore” and “Brothers On My Jock”. He came to fame in the early 1990s as an artist on the Def Jam label. Perhaps that's what Redman wanted you to know about North Jers-that no matter what was being rapped about, it was going to sound great.Reginald “Reggie” Noble (born April 17, 1970), better known by his stage name Redman, is an American MC, rapper, DJ, record producer and actor. There are 23 tracks, six of which are skits, and they're all about getting intoxicated, wildin’ out, having sex, and being the illest rapper in the world. Luckily, Redman, at the time, was one of the illest rappers in the world, and was able to fire off engrossing verses about absolutely anything. Example: There’s an entire song on the album about him getting pulled over by the cops.
The only knock against the album? Its length. He was, as he called himself, the “super-lyrical individual” who spit crazy metaphors in a shape-shifting flow that made you believe he would actually leave your boombox’s circuits overworked. He may have toned it down, but the rhymes were still crazy. So, yeah, Redman was back on his bullshit. On the same track he closes a verse with, “Fuck what ya heard, Brick City runs shit.”
On one of his quintessential cuts, the hilarious gutter groove “Pick it Up,” Red admits to delivering a slightly different product: “Niggas be like, ‘Ahh, he changed his style up’/Shut the fuck up, you still a dick ridah.” All throughout the album are small jabs-some playful, others not so much-at the city across the Hudson. Some complained that it sounded like a like New York record. Because it did not feel like a demented carnival ride, many Redman fans noted that the album didn’t feel like a Redman album. He and Erick Sermon recruited a few new producers (among them, Wyclef’s cousin Jerry Wonda), some new rappers (Method Man, Napalm), and expanded their sample palate to look (a little) beyond funk. Despite that, the album made Redman a star, selling over 500,000 in two months and eventually moving two million copies.įor his third outing, the Funk Doc managed to clear his head of the demons that haunted the previous project. In interviews, he would reveal that the album was made during a very dark time in his life a time he doesn’t wish to revisit, hence him not performing any of the album’s tracks at shows. The follow-up, Dare Iz a Darkside, doubled down on the funk while venturing further into Redman’s eerie psychedelic world. They sound like Redman’s early oeuvre.Īfter linking up with EPMD’s Erick Sermon six years earlier, Reggie Noble embarked on a career that would spawn an incredible debut, Whut? The Album, seeped in funk samples and muddled drums, and bolstered by Red’s crazy energetic personality and unfuckwitable rhymes. But what about Northern New Jersey? Specifically, places like Newark, Elizabeth, Paterson, and Jersey City, cities deep in the shadow of the Big Apple-what of them? Those parts of the Garden State sound muddy and dirty. What does New Jersey sound like? Travel down the Turnpike and people will tell you Jersey sounds like Bruce Springsteen.
